News people working for two different TV networks made the same flub Thursday, prematurely announcing the death of a U.S. political figure. TVNewser.com reports that Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson and NBC News correspondent Luke Russert reported that Rep. Bill Young, R.-Fla., had died.

In fact, Young is gravely ill, but not deceased, the story says.

Russert tweeted the news at 1:54 p.m., with other NBC News reporters retweeting his message. Carlson reported the news on air at 2:05.

Young’s family clarified the situation soon afterward, noting that Young is in the hospital and "gravely ill" but not dead. Fox News and Russert then corrected their statements.

"I am really sorry to report that earlier we did report that Congressman Bill Young had passed away, and we can now report that was not the case,” Carlson said. “We sincerely apologize for the error — hopefully that will not happen again.”

Young, who is 82, served 22 terms in Congress before announcing last week that he would not seek re-election.
