Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Warren Beatty, Harrison Ford, Jodie Foster, Spielberg and Scorsese Have All Showed Up to Accept the Golden Globes’ Most Prestigious Award. But This Year’s Winner, Reportedly, Won’t Show Up. Huh?

This seems bizarre. Usually the winner of the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille award for "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment" makes it a point to accept the award in person when it’s presented at the annual broadcast of the Golden Globes.

However, according to our friend Nellie Andreeva at Deadline.com, "It looks like Woody Allen will be staying true to his principles of shunning awards shows (and Los Angeles). I hear that the Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning filmmaker is not expected to attend the Golden Globes in January, where he will be the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award. I hear the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) made the decision to honor Allen without securing a commitment from him that he would attend."

Past winners of the award include Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Warren Beatty, Harrison Ford, Jodie Foster, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, all of whom have shown up at the ceremony to accept their awards and give speeches.

The article continues, "Getting Allen to go to the Globes would’ve been an incredible coup as he is notorious about ignoring trophy shows. He wasn’t present to receive any of his three Oscars out of 23 nominations and has shied away from the Golden Globes despite 13 nominations and two wins. In fact, the only awards show he ever attended was the 2002 Academy Awards as an ambassador of New York, thanking Hollywood for its support of his beloved city post-9/11."

What appears particularly odd is that, knowing Allen does not attend these events, the HFPA would not have first made sure he would attend before announcing that he will ge the award.

  1. Woody has NEVER showed up for one of these boring shows, & I can’t blame him…especially the Oscar awards. Just mail his award to him and get over it.

  2. Comparing the only 90 member Golden Globe membership to the 6,000 active industry professionals in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences seems absurd.
Anyway, Woody Allen has won 4 Academy awards (not three), three for screenplays and one for directing Annie Hall.
But, yes, I agree that he should show-up once and a while as a veteran of the business.

  3. I can completely understand him not wanting to attend the ceremonies, so why can’t he just not accept the awards and ask not to be nominated for anything? Wouldn’t that make it simpler?
