Michael Kaufman, the brother of comedian Andy Kaufman, said he believes he’s the victim of a hoax that is designed to make him believe his brother is still alive and is the father to a young woman, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"I believe I am part of the hoax," Kaufman said Thursday on CNN’s "The Lead with Jake Tapper." "I don’t believe that [the woman claiming to be Andy Kaufman's daughter] is acting on her own, though."
As previously reported, Michael Kaufman told an audience at a comedy club on Monday that he received a letter from his brother 15 years after his death, and introduced a woman who claimed to be Andy Kaufman’s daughter. The comedian died in 1984 of lung cancer.
But the woman who claimed to be Andy Kaufman’s daughter is actually an actress, whose father is a Manhattan doctor, according to a report on The Smoking Gun. Her real name is Alexandra Tatarsky. The publication claimed that Michael Kaufman recruited her to play the role of Andy Kaufman’s daughter.
Michael Kaufman denied The Smoking Gun’s claim that he hired the actress, THR notes.
Separately, Andy Kaufman’s last girlfriend, Lynne Margulies, tells TMZ that she was in the hospital room when Kaufman died.
"I was in the hospital room. I was there. They would have had to switch bodies," she told the publication. She added that Andy Kaufman has a daughter named Maria, who is in her 40s, and that he had no other children.
