Barry Diller, Once a Top Executive at ABC and Fox, Says if He Were Still a Traditional Broadcaster He’d Sue TV Business Disrupter Aereo as the Broadcasters Are Doing. The Irony: Diller Is the Primary Backer of Aereo

If Barry Diller were "still a broadcast executive and encountered competitors like Aereo, ‘I’d sue ’em,’ he said," reports Bloomberg Businessweek.

Diller was at one time a top executive at ABC and later Fox Broadcasting. The irony is that, besides owning Expedia, he is the chairman of IAC/InterActiveCorp, which is the primary backer of Aereo.

Aereo uses micro-antennae and says it doesn’t have to pay to retransmit broadcast signals to Aereo subscribers. Aereo has been sued by a number of broadcasters, and so far Aereo is winning in the courts.

The Businessweek article also notes: "Billionaire Diller, the backer of Aereo Inc., said the online-television service may eventually get as much as 35 percent of U.S. households to subscribe if it overcomes legal challenges from broadcasters.

"People in their mid- to late 20s aren’t willing to pay $100 a month for cable-TV packages, making Aereo’s $8 service increasingly attractive, Diller said [yesterday, Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013] at The Year Ahead: 2014, a two-day conference hosted by Bloomberg LP in Chicago."
