Change in Store for ‘American Idol’

A key change is coming for Fox’s singing competition series “American Idol." The Hollywood Reporter’s Idol Worship reports that the show is bringing back musical director Rickey Minor, after he left for two years to take on leadership of NBC’s "Tonight Show” band.

The change comes as Jay Leno is preparing to give up his "Tonight Show" perch to Jimmy Fallon, the story notes.

“Naturally, that means Ray Chew and his Ray Chew Live band will not be back when season 13 launches in January,” the piece notes.

Minor said he plans to “elevate our game” by using a “strong, live element and really making distinct arrangements based around the contestants. Because a great song is a great song, but make it contemporary and original, like we did with Adam Lambert and David Cook and all the artists where we helped them find their voice. That’s really the key.”
