Actor Martin Sheen, known for his roles on “The West Wing” and in the classic film “Apocalypse Now,” will star in an Animal Planet original movie, the New York Post reports.

Sheen will play Old Thomas Nickerson in the two-hour movie "The Whale," which is based on the true story of the Essex, a 19th century whaling ship that sank in 1820 after being attacked by a sperm whale. The story is said to have formed the basis for Herman Melville’s novel “Moby Dick.”

The project is based on the memoirs of Thomas Nickerson, who served as the cabin boy on the ship and was one of its survivors.

No airdate has been set for the film, in which Sheen will play Nickerson as an older man.

The project, a co-production of Animal Planet and BBC Factual Productions, was shot on location in Malta and in London, the story notes.
