Longtime NBC newsman Tom Brokaw, 74, has been diagnosed with the cancer multiple myeloma, reports the Associated Press.

According to the website WebMD: "Multiple myeloma is a blood disorder related to lymphoma and leukemia, because it usually arises in the bone marrow. There is no cure for multiple myeloma, but treatments are available that slow its progression."

WebMD adds: "Even the best prediction system cannot say how long an individual person will live with the disease. Most people with multiple myeloma will live for years after their diagnosis."

The AP story says that, according to NBC News, Brokaw’s "doctors are optimistic about his treatment and encouraged by his progress since the August diagnosis." The diagnosis was made by the Mayo Clinic, the story notes.

In a statement, Brokaw said he is still “the luckiest guy I know” and is “very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come," according to the AP.

Brokaw was NBC’s primary news personality from 1982 to 2004, when he was the anchor and managing editor of the "NBC Nightly News."

He has worked on projects during his treatment, and during the Winter Olympics he is contributing to NBC Sports coverage, the story reports. He added that he wants to keep his health a private matter, the AP piece notes.

Here’s a video of CNN’s Anderson Cooper discussing Brokaw’s condition with CNN’s chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, who is a medical doctor specializing in neurosurgery.
