Prime Time Sinks on Other Broadcast Nets as NBC’s Olympics Coverage Builds Momentum

NBC’s prime-time coverage of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, blew away the network’s broadcast competition Tuesday night and posted gains on the previous Winter Games, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that most of the fresh programming on rival broadcast nets came in at series lows, as NBC’s Olympics rolled to a 6.6 average rating in viewers 18-49 from 8-11 p.m. — up from a 5.5 for the sixth night of the 2010 Olympics.

Fox was the only other big four network to put up a slate of original programs, and it took a beating. Back-to-back installments of "Dads" wrapped up the series’ run on the network with a 1.2 average in 18-49 for the 8 p.m. episode, down three-tenths of a point from last week, and a grim 1.0 for the series finale.

Fox’s "New Girl" fell three-tenths from last week to a series-low 1.3 average in the 18-49 demo, and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" was off two-tenths to a series-low 1.2.

CBS opted not to compete, airing a lineup of drama repeats and settling for a fourth-place overall finish, behind Univision but ahead of ABC.

ABC aired only one original program, "Killer Women," which equaled its series low from last week, a 0.7 in adults 18-49.

The numbers for prime time overall show NBC with a huge lead — a 6.6 average in viewers 18-49, well ahead of Fox and Univision (both with 1.2 averages), CBS (1.1) and ABC (0.8). Total viewers finds a similar picture, with NBC averaging 23.7 million to trounce CBS (7.8 million), Univision (3.1 million), ABC (3.0 million) and Fox (2.8 million).
