NBCUniversal and World Wrestling Entertainment have been in tough talks as they grapple with trying to reach terms on a contract renewal. The New York Post reports that WWE gave NBCU until Feb. 14 — Valentine’s Day — to respond to its final offer.
The move comes after an exclusive negotiating period ended last week without a deal, the story reports.
The last deal reportedly had a price tag of $140 million, and it’s thought that the WWE wants a boost that gives it the type of premium awarded to sports rights, the story says. The deal would keep WWE’s programming on NBCUniversal’s USA Network and Syfy.
“WWE — which announced the launch of its own over-the-top network for wrestling fans at CES — is one of the few things on TV ( besides sports) that fans want to watch live,” the article notes. “The question is, how badly does NBCU want to keep it? And where will it land if the two parties split up?”
