A&E’s ‘Duck Dynasty’ Takes a Ratings Hit With Season 5 Finale

A&E Network’s “Duck Dynasty” saw its viewership take a dive with the reality show’s fifth-season finale. Deadline.com reports that only 6 million viewers tuned in, a 28% drop from the season-four finale.

The reality show also took a hit in the 18-49 demographic, with only 3.2 million viewers in that group watching the Wednesday night finale. That’s down 27% from the October 23 fourth-season finale.

The decline comes after a controversy involving family patriarch Phil Robertson, who was suspended for a short time after making anti-gay remarks. “The decline may not have been directly related to the issue of Mr. Robertson’s comments, however, because the show was most likely ready to descend from its lofty ratings,” notes Bill Carter in The New York Times.

The Deadline report adds: “Though it was down from the previous finale, last night’s ‘DD’ was up from the previous week’s show by 28% in total viewers. The episode also had a 33% rise in the key demo from it’s March 19 show. Despite all the lows this season and the finale results, that still leaves the controversial series as the top show on cable in viewers and among adults 18-49 and the second-highest-rated show on all of TV [Wednesday] night behind ABC’s ‘Modern Family.”
