Fox got just enough out of its sputtering "American Idol" to claim a win for prime time Wednesday night, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo.
TVbytheNumbers.com reports that Fox’s two-hour "Idol" served up a 2.4 average rating in viewers 18-49, putting the network just ahead of CBS, which averaged a 2.3 for its three hours of prime time. That could change, as the report notes that CBS’s numbers may be subject to more than the usual adjustments due to some pre-emptions and delays related to college basketball.
In preliminary results, CBS’s "Survivor" delivered a 2.5 average in 18-49, rising one-tenth from a week ago, while "Criminal Minds" fell three-tenths to a 2.3 and "CSI" climbed three-tenths to a 2.0.
For "Survivor" it was the reality franchise’s first win going head-to-head against "American Idol" in series history, Deadline.com reports. "Idol’s" number in the 18-49 demo for the 8 p.m. hour, when the two shows were up against each other, was a 2.3.
Third-place ABC had the night’s top show on broadcast, with "Modern Family" pulling a 3.3 average in the 18-49 demo, off one-tenth from a week earlier. The bad news for the Alphabet Network: a couple of series lows, with "Suburgatory" losing three-tenths to match its all-time low with a 1.4 average, while "Mixology" fell two-tenths to a series-low 1.5.
Elsewhere on ABC, "The Middle" equaled last week’s number in adults 18-49, a 1.9, and "Nashville" slipped one-tenth to a 1.4.
NBC brought up the rear among the big four broadcast nets in the 18-49 demo, with "Revolution" holding steady to last week with a 1.3 average, "Law & Order: SVU" also holding steady, with a 1.6, and "Chicago PD" bouncing back slightly after recording a series low a week ago, ticking up one-tenth to a 1.6.
For prime time overall, Fox’s 2.4 average was tops in viewers 18-49, followed by CBS (2.3 average), ABC (1.8), NBC (1.5) and Univision (1.0). CBS squeezed ahead in total viewer, averaging 10.19 million to Fox’s 10.11 million, followed by ABC (5.9 million), NBC (5.6 million) and Univision (2.8 million).
