For the first time since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has been handing out Oscars, starting in 1929, a film with a black director — "12 Years a Slave," directed by Steve McQueen — was honored as Best Picture, The New York Times reports.

“I’d like to thank this amazing story,” McQueen said of the movie, about a 19th century man who is kidnapped into slavery. “Everyone deserves not just to survive, but to live.”

McQueen just moments before had been passed over for the directing award, which was given to Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity.” The space drama was in a “ferocious contest for the best picture statuette” with “12 Years a Slave” and “American Hustle," the story reports.

“12 Years a Slave” won three awards, while “Gravity” won seven, making the latter the most awarded film of the night. "American Hustle" was shut out.
