John Travolta Opens Up About His Idina Menzel Flub at the Oscars — as the Gaffe Spawns a Cottage Industry

John Travolta is speaking out for the first time about his flub of singer and actress Idina Menzel’s name at the Academy Awards ceremony, reports People magazine.

“I’ve been beating myself up all day," Travolta said in a statement Tuesday. "Then I thought, what would Idina Menzel say? She’d say, let it go, let it go!"

Travolta badly mispronounced Menzel’s name during the ceremony, introducing her as something that sounded like “Adele Dazeem.” The mistake prompted the creation of the “Adele Dazeem Name Generator,” which invites you to “Travoltify Your Name.” The generator was posted on Slate.

Meanwhile, and predictably, video sites on the Internet have gone nuts over Travolta and Adele Dazeem, with, for example, countless YouTube videos popping up that mock the incident. (A search for "Adele Dazeem" would be one place to start.)

Menzel apparently found the error funny, according to People, which adds that she was too focused on her performance at the time to notice the mistake.

In case you missed it, or if you just can’t get enough, here’s the original — Travolta butchering Menzel’s name:
