NFL Raises Its Price — by a Lot — for Middle-Finger Salute During Super Bowl

The National Football League is now asking hip-hop artist M.I.A. to pay an additional $15.1 million for giving the middle finger during her 2012 halftime performance at the Super Bowl, reports TheWrap.com.

“NFL is requesting the large sum — in addition to the original $1.5 million that it is still seeking in damages — based on the fact that advertisers paid that much per minute for ad placement during the big game that year,” the story reports.

M.I.A. and her team said the claim “lacks any basis in law, fact, or logic,” and accused NFL Enterprises LLC of intending “to bully and make an example of” the performer. Representatives for the NFL and M.I.A. didn’t immediately return requests for comment to TheWrap.

The hip-hop artist’s attorneys claim there’s precedence for similar behavior during a halftime show, the piece notes. “The filing cited Michael Jackson’s 1993 halftime performance, ‘during which he repeatedly grabbed or fondled his genitalia,’ and Prince’s in 2007, when he caressed the neck of ‘an erect oversized phallus’ (his guitar) for all to see,” the story reports.
