Changes Coming to Series That Has Been Airing for 28 Years

An award-winning prime-time series is undergoing some changes after 28 years on television. Writing in The New York Times, Elizabeth Jensen reports that the PBS series “American Masters,” which has traditionally looked at the lives of American artists and cultural icons, will broaden its scope to include notable people working in science and industry.

WNET-TV, which produces the series, has also hired a new executive producer, with filmmaker Michael Kantor taking over the role. Kantor, 53, replaces Susan Lacy, who created the program and left for HBO last fall.

Kantor told Jensen that the show will be given a more modern look, and will expand beyond the artists who appeal to baby boomers. He said he is “keen to look at masters in the making, looking at emerging American masters,” the story notes.
