An original Disney Channel movie that was a hit for the cable channel last summer will get a sequel. The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that Disney Channel ordered a follow-up to last summer's “Teen Beach Movie” following months of speculation about a sequel.

Production will start this summer for a 2015 debut. The original show’s stars, who include Ross Lynch and Maia Mitchell, will return.

The plot of “Teen Beach Movie 2” will take place months after McKenzie (played by Mitchell) and Brady (Lynch) return from their cross-dimensional trip into a 1960s beach party movie called “Wet Side Story.” This time around, they receive a surprise visit from the friends they met inside the film.

“Teen Beach Movie” rates as cable television’s second-highest-rated movie in total viewers, with 13.53 million people tuning in, the story says.

"The audience response to the first ‘Teen Beach Movie’ was overwhelming. We are thrilled to have the cast back for a new music-driven saga that continues this fantastical story," said Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer at Disney Channels Worldwide, in a statement released Sunday.
