The new movie from Joss Whedon, known for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and a string of successful TV series as well as his high-profile feature film directing career, got a surprise worldwide online release this morning, MTV.com reports.

Whedon reportedly announced the digital release of "In Your Eyes," which he co-wrote and executive produced, at the movie's world premiere Sunday night at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.

"The usual bevy of stars, including Zoe Kazan (who stars in the movie), Paul Dano, Haley Joel Osment (who has a beard now!), Nikki Reed and more, turned out, but one person was notably absent: Whedon himself," the story reports, adding: "Whedon appeared to the crowd via video after the movie screened, thanking them all for coming and announcing the release date for 'In Your Eyes': Today."

The movie is available online on Vimeo for $5. Whedon reportedly told attendees: "It's not just the premiere of the film, it is the worldwide release date because as of now, 'In Your Eyes' is available on any Internet-capable device."

He added: "This is exciting for us because it means we get to explore yet another form of distribution, and we get $5."

The article notes: "'In Your Eyes' is a sci-fi romance in which a doctor's wife (Kazan) falls in love with an ex-con (Michael Stahl-David). Is she the Slayer? Do they go to space with the Browncoats? You'll have to watch the movie to find out."

If you're not quite ready to lay down five smackers just yet, the first three minutes of the movie are available online. When you're ready, the digital rental is available at the movie's official site.

Whedon is behind TV series including "Angel," "Firefly," "Dollhouse" and "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD," and wrote and directed the 2012 feature film adaptation "Marvel's The Avengers," the third-highest-grossing film of all time.
