John Oliver had a strong debut Sunday night for his new HBO show “Last Week Tonight.” Deadline.com reports that the show drew 1.4 million viewers over two airings Sunday night.

That’s an improvement of more than 51% from the time period’s average, the story notes. An initial airing of the new program drew 1.1 million viewers, while the second play pushed it up to 1.4 million.

“For comparison sake: Last week on Comedy Central, which is available in more than three times as many homes as HBO, ‘The Daily Show’ averaged 1.5 million viewers for its 11 p.m. premieres and ‘The Colbert Report’ averaged 1.2 million viewers at 11:30 p.m.,” the piece notes.

Earlier Sunday evening, “Silicon Valley” drew 1.6 million viewers, while the night’s biggest show on HBO was an episode of “Game of Thrones” at 9 p.m., which drew 6.9 million viewers in its initial airing.
