MSNBC is apologizing for an incident this week on one of its shows. Deadline.com reports that the apology concerns a segment on “Way Too Early” in which, during a discussion of the origins of Cinco de Mayo, “Morning Joe” producer Louis Burgdorf shook maracas and pretended to slug tequila.

Host Thomas Roberts talked about the holiday’s history, adding, “It’s also an excuse to drink tequila on a Monday morning at work for Louis.”

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists said the segment showed a “lack of judgment, insensitivity” and was an “attack of the Mexican community.” It added: “The segment clearly proves that diversity is lacking at the ‘Way Too Early’ program. Too often mistakes like these are made because the people making them are not representative of the community the content portrays.”

MSNBC apologized on its website, writing, “On Monday, Cinco De Mayo, ‘Way Too Early’ made sarcastic references to the way some Americans celebrate the holiday. It was not our intention to be disrespectful and we sincerely apologize for the ill-advised references.”
