HBO has a political drama in the works that's written by a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Deadline.com reports. The project is “God Save Texas,” from author Lawrence Wright and executive produced by “X-Men” producer Lauren Shuler Donner.

The drama follows a cowboy who, in trying to save his ranch and his marriage, starts a campaign to get into the Texas Legislature. He becomes a target of the energy lobby as he deals with Texas politics, the story says.

The project is based on Wright's 2005 play “Sonny’s Last Shot.” The story notes that Texas politics is a “timely subject, given the emergence of Texan politicians like Wendy Davis, Greg Abbott, Rick Perry and the Castro Brothers onto the national political scene, and the influence that Texas exerts over the rest of the country.”

Wright won the Pulitzer in 2007 for "The Looming Tower."
