One of the most successful television producers of all time says he can’t get a series made today. Deadline.com reports that Norman Lear, the producer behind hits such as “All in the Family,” “The Jeffersons" and "Maude,” hinted at ageism in his comments.

Lear, who is almost 92, talked about his career at the Produced By conference, noting that while no one ever said “No” to “All in the Family” and other shows, when he pitches a comedy that’s set in a retirement village, he’s not getting bites.

“They don’t want to touch the demographic,” he said. He added that there’s apparently room for only one old person  — Betty White — today on TV.

The show Lear is pitching is called “Guess Who’s Dead,” which the piece reports got a laugh from the conference audience.

The story adds: “It is particularly ironic that Lear, whose People for the American Way organization long has fought for free speech and civil rights, isn’t free to speak to a wider audience than the one gathered Sunday on the Warner Bros. lot, because what he has to say about ‘the foolishness of the human condition’ is as timeless as it is wise and funny.”
