Authorities are reportedly investigating allegations that "Casey Kasem's health may have been fatally compromised when his wife removed him from a convalescent home and took him on a surreptitious, multi-state ride," TMZ.com reports.
The article says Jean Kasem, an actress who played Loretta Tortelli on "Cheers" and later on its short-lived spinoff "The Tortellis," is being accused of elder abuse and is the focus of a criminal investigation. Her husband, famed radio DJ Casey Kasem, remains hospitalized and is thought to be near death.
"Family sources tell TMZ … Casey's daughter Kerri contacted the Santa Monica Police Dept., claiming her dad is the victim of elder abuse at the hands of Jean Kasem," TMZ reports. "Kerri handed over documents which she said showed … Jean removed Casey from the Berkley East Convalescent Hospital [in Santa Monica, Calif.] last month. Kerri claims Jean drove to Nevada to find a place to keep Casey away from the family."
The story says Jean Kasem then took her husband to Arizona and back to Nevada before eventually flying him to Washington state.
"Our sources say Kerri has medical documents showing that during the trip Casey developed a bedsore which then became infected and ultimately life-threatening," the TMZ report adds. "Kasem family sources say the infection could end up being the immediate cause of death — which looks likely to occur at any time."
The report cites sources saying the accusations by Casey Kasem's daughter are being investigated by Santa Monica police, with Jean Kasem the target of the investigation.
