Watching three of more hours of television a day isn’t just unhealthy, a new study suggests, it can lead to premature death, according to LiveScience.
The study, published in the journal of the American Heart Association, involved more than 13,200 adults in Spain who were about 37 years old when the study started and were college graduates. The participants were followed over the course of eight years.
The participants who watched three or more hours of TV a day were twice as likely to die during the study’s time frame, compared with people who watched for one hour or less, the story notes.
“In addition, the researchers found that participants' total time spent sitting — including time spent watching TV, using a computer or driving — was also linked to an increased risk of death during the study period,” the piece adds.
The findings held up even after taking into account other risk factors, such as smoking habits and physical activity level.
"Our findings suggest that not only the promotion of physical activity but also the reduction in sedentary activities (especially television viewing) is a priority for the prevention of premature mortality," the researchers, from the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, wrote.
