Starz has ordered a new series from writer-director Steven Soderbergh. The Los Angeles Times' Show Tracker reports that the channel greenlighted "The Girlfriend Experience," an anthology series based on Soderbergh's 2009 feature of the same name, about high-end call girls.

Soderbergh also has a new series, "The Knick," coming up on Cinemax.

Soderbergh's 2009 movie "starred porn star Sasha Gray as a high-end Manhattan call girl dealing with the day-to-day troubles of that profession," the story reports. "The series expands on that idea, with each installment of the 13-episode [series] following a different woman in a different city."

Indie filmmakers Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz are on board to write and direct, with Soderbergh executive producing along with Philip Fleishman, the story reports.

"Kerrigan was writer-director of films 'Clean, Shaven,' 'Keane' and 'Rebecca H. (Return to the Dogs)' and has recently directed episodes of 'Homeland,' 'Bates Motel' and 'The Americans,'" the report adds.

Fleishman talked about the series' fictional subjects in a statement, saying: "Many of these women are extremely accomplished. They range from musicians in major orchestras to PhD candidates in the sciences and often feel empowered by the control and economic freedom their work as GFE's affords them. The question is whether they define a new genus of contemporary relationship, or have relationships always been transactionally based in one form or another?"
