Verizon and Netflix in War of Words Over Slow Streams

Netflix and Verizon are fighting over who’s at fault for slow streams, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Company Town. Netflix has recently starting displaying a message to consumers experiencing buffering delays, noting, “The Verizon Network is crowded right now.”

Verizon, though, put out a statement on its public policy blog that said Netflix isn’t being straight with its customers.

“The source of the problem is almost certainly NOT congestion in Verizon's network," David Young, Verizon's vice president of federal regulatory affairs, said in the statement. "Instead, the problem is most likely congestion on the connection that Netflix has chosen to use to reach Verizon's network."

Young continued, “It would be more accurate for Netflix's message screen to say: 'The path that we have chosen to reach Verizon’s network is crowded right now.' However, that would highlight their responsibility for the problem."

The spat comes after Netflix has criticized Internet providers for streaming problems, and following its deal to pay Comcast to receive a direct connection to its cable broadband network, the story notes. Netflix also has a similar pact with Verizon.
