Summer Competition Shows Post Ratings Increases

Sunday was a better night for summer reality competition shows on the broadcast networks, as ABC's "Wipeout" and "Rising Star" and CBS's "Big Brother" all improved on their numbers from a week ago, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo.

When the dust settled, ABC had a narrow win for the night over CBS, as both networks distanced themselves from rerun-heavy Fox and NBC.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that CBS's "Big Brother" was the top show of the night on broadcast prime in viewers 18-49, by a sizable margin. The venerable reality show rose two-tenths of a point from last week to a 2.1 average — easily outdistancing its closest competition, which came from a repeat of ABC's "America's Funniest Home Videos," with a 1.5 average.

Elsewhere on CBS, "Unforgettable" delivered a 0.9 average in 18-49, rising two-tenths from a week ago, and "Reckless" matched last week's 0.6.

No. 1 ABC saw "Wipeout" improve two-tenths in adults 18-49 to a 1.3 average rating, while "Rising Star" also improved two-tenths, to a 1.4.

Fox's only prime-time original, "Brain Games," was unable to improve on last week, delivering another 0.5 average in 18-49. NBC put up an all-repeat lineup and finished in fourth place among the big four broadcast nets.

The numbers for prime time overall show ABC just ahead in the 18-49 demo with a 1.2 average, topping CBS (1.1 average), Fox (0.7) and NBC (0.6). CBS came out on top in total viewers with 6.2 million, leading ABC (4.7 million), NBC (2.5 million) and Fox (1.9 million).
