Syfy Show Becomes a Surprise Piracy Hit

Sep 15, 2014  •  Post A Comment

A little-known show from Syfy has become a piracy hit. Variety reports that over the weekend the zombie show “Z Nation” was downloaded by 300,000 unique IP addresses within 24 hours of its debut.

That’s far below the most-pirated TV show, HBO’s “Game of Thrones, which saw 1 million downloads for its fourth-season premiere, but it’s more than other popular shows, such as “Orange Is the New Black,” the story reports.

“Another humbling comparison: When a copy of ‘The Expendables 3’ leaked three weeks prior to its release, that attracted just 189,000 — not even close to what ‘Z Nation’ did. The torrent in question, marked ‘Z Nation S01E01 HDTV x264-KILLERS[ettv],‘ was the most active among all torrents in the U.S. in the last 24 hours,” the story says.

Still, the piece adds, “No word yet on whether high piracy levels will be a bellwether for good ratings for Syfy, or whether the series will see its TV audience cannibalized by copyright infringement.”

  1. And here’s the problem. I don’t have cable/satellite, but this show looks interesting. Is it interesting enough for me to pay $80/month for cable. Nope, not even close. Lost viewer. And don’t feel like pirating the show. But would I pay a Hulu Plus or Netflix fee to view the show, even with ads, or possibly even buy the eps as digital downloads? Absolutely.

    • Hussman, this series *is* available for digital download at iTunes, Amazon and Google Play. Problem solved!
