Early ’90s Cult Favorite TV Series Coming Back

A drama series that became one of television’s quintessential cult shows in its run in the early 1990s is coming back. USA Today reports that Showtime is planning a nine-episode run for a new version of “Twin Peaks,” with the possibility of additional episodes beyond the initial run.

The new series is due in 2016. All episodes will be written by David Lynch and Mark Frost, the co-creators of the original series. Lynch will direct.

The original show aired only 30 episodes in its run on ABC in 1990-91. “The series starred Kyle MacLachlan as quirky FBI Agent Dale Cooper, who arrived in a small town in the Northwest to investigate the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer,” the report notes. “Along the way, he unearthed secrets about the eccentric townsfolk, from one-eyed Nadine to the Log Lady, and Laura’s look-alike cousin, Maddy.”

Lynch has indicated in the past that he was done with “Twin Peaks.” But Frost said the idea for the new series has been “percolating for years,” the report notes. Frost adds in the piece that the idea “really caught fire for us about three years ago, when we found the sparks that led us to where the story should go and what we could do with it.”

The direction of the show is being kept under wraps, and no word has surfaced as to which cast members will return.
