There’s a new top dog on Kickstarter, and it’s generating a lot of scratch. “Exploding Kittens,” a new card game, shattered fundraising site Kickstarter’s game record by pulling in $4.7 million, The Washington Post reports.
That’s the most ever for a game and the seventh-highest total in history for anything on Kickstarter. And the campaign still has three weeks to go.
The original goal was to collect $10,000, the report notes. The game comes from “The Oatmeal” creator Matthew Inman and gaming industry veterans Elan Lee and Shane Small.
“Nearly 120,000 people have backed ‘Exploding Kittens,’ a game (and campaign) that hits that viral sweet spot of seriously humorous with a just-right touch of the transgressive,” The Post reports.
Said Inman, a cartoonist, describing his game: It’s “a lot of fun — and it’s funny.”
The project appears to be closing in on a couple of other popular campaigns: “Bring Reading Rainbow Back,” currently sixth overall with $5.4 million, and “The Veronica Mars Movie, fifth with $5.7 million.
