CBS Scores Big Ratings Win

Fueled by strong performances on both the comedy and the drama side, CBS powered its way to not only its usual win in total viewers last week, but also a win in the key 18-49 demo. Variety reports that the Eye Network’s victory for the week ending March 15 comes even as a formidable newcomer continues to gain ground.

“Fox’s ‘Empire’ continued its amazing growth streak last week but it wasn’t enough to help the net keep CBS from stepping up to the podium as the week’s winner in key demos,” Variety reports. “The Eye edged out NBC and ABC in adults 18-49, with Fox just a a bit behind them. All four broadcasters earned the same 5 share in adults 18-49 as the ratings race continues to be competitive in the second half of the season.”

CBS averaged a 1.6 rating in 18-49 for the week in prime time, with ABC and NBC both averaging 1.5 and Fox coming in with a 1.4. Ratings are based on Nielsen live plus same-day figures.

In total viewers, CBS was way ahead of the pack with 9.19 million. Trailing were NBC with 6.37 million, ABC with 5.64 million and Fox with 4.55 million.

Two CBS shows sit atop the rankings for the week in total viewers: “NCIS” with 16.22 million at No. 1 and “The Big Bang Theory” at No. 2 with 16.13 million. Fox’s breakout “Empire” was third with 14.92 million, with NBC’s “The Voice” (Monday) in fourth (13.95 million) and AMC’s “The Walking Dead” cracking the top five with 13.78.

When it comes to the key 18-49 demo, the cable hit “The Walking Dead” continues to trounce its broadcast competition, topping the list with a 7.0 average rating, ahead of “Empire” (5.8 average), “The Big Bang Theory” (4.4), and the Monday and Tuesday editions of “The Voice,” both with 3.8 averages.
