HBO Pulls Plug on Comedy Project

Pay cable channel HBO has decided to shelve a comedy project from the creator of “Enlightened.” Deadline.com reports that the channel will not go ahead with “Mamma Dallas,” from Mike White.

The project centered on a conservative family in Texas that unknowingly hires a drag queen as the family’s nanny.

HBO programming head Michael Lombardo indicated that the channel remains high on White. In a statement given to Deadline, Lombardo said: “Mike White is one of the most talented filmmakers working today and we feel honored to have worked with him on ‘Enlightened’ and the ‘Mamma Dallas’ pilot. The latter only reinforced our views of Mike’s prodigious talents. … We truly hope that we will find another opportunity to work together.”

White is the writer, director and executive producer of “Mamma Dallas.” In addition to co-creating “Enlightened” with the show’s star Laura Dern, White wrote every episode and directed and executive produced the show, along with appearing on it as Dern’s co-worker Tyler.

  1. Neither Lombardo or Pepler should be allowed witin miles of a comedy! They would not know one if it flew up their nose. I work there and to say they are ignorant of humor would be a vast understatement.
