BBC’s Hit Car Show ‘Top Gear’ to Return — With a Replacement for Scandal-Plagued Host

The BBC says it’s bringing back its huge global hit “Top Gear,” but the car show will be missing one of its fixtures. The AP reports that Jeremy Clarkson, who was fired in March after punching one of the show’s producers, won’t be back.

“The broadcaster says radio and TV personality Chris Evans has signed a three-year deal to lead a new lineup for the show, which has won a huge following with its mix of car tips, driving stunts and jokey banter,” the story reports.

The show’s future was in doubt following the incident involving the popular but troublesome Clarkson, whose “brash, blokey persona was a large part of ‘Top Gear’s’ appeal to fans,” the AP notes.

  1. Top Gear, or at least a very poor imitation of Top Gear, will be back without four of its fixtures. None of the hosts, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May, are returning, nor is the executive producer, Andy Wilman, returning. These four made the show the global phenomenon it became. Hoping beyond hope that another network signs them to a rival show which will be every bit as successful as they made Top Gear.

  2. It is painfully obvious that this is going to be a complete failure before it’s first episode.
Though Mr. Evans might be good at somethings, trying to “re-create” Top Gear as it was will once again show the world how much General Producer Tony Hall is inept at doing his job. As the saying goes about pieces of paper called college degrees, “An A or a D, you still get the degree !”
Obviously Tony Hall got a lot of D’s in school.
