Thursday night’s finale of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” details of which were kept under wraps by Comedy Central until the big night, had its share of surprises, one of them being an appearance by Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band.

Springsteen provided Stewart’s “Moment of Zen” near the end of the show, performing “Land of Hope and Dreams” and “Born to Run.”

The show also featured a reunion of many of the personalities who were a part of the program during Stewart’s 16-year tenure, including Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Lewis Black, Rob Corddry, Aasif Mandvi, Samantha Bee and Wyatt Cenac.

“Colbert, who begins in September as David Letterman’s replacement on CBS’s ‘Late Show,’ offered the most heartfelt tribute, saying the accomplishments of Stewart’s troupe members through the years was a testament to the example he set,” veteran TV writer David Bauder reports for the AP.

Colbert told Stewart: “You were infuriatingly good at your job.”

Also paying tribute to Stewart were a number of his frequent targets. “Wolf Blitzer wished him well, while the screen behind him on the CNN set read, ‘Screw you, Stewart,'” Bauder notes.

John McCain appeared in a cameo saying, “So long, jackass.”

And Hillary Rodham Clinton lamented Stewart’s departure “just when I’m running for president. What a bummer.”

Trevor Noah takes over for Stewart as “Daily Show” host next month.

  1. Now where we find the voice of reason, who skewers both sides of the aisle with such aplomb?

  2. Class act by Jon Stewart and his producers to include Craig Kilborn in the first segment of the show.

  3. The irony is that it was likely John’s biggest opponent, Fox News, that kept him from setting a ratings record for the show. The debate grabbed a lot of viewers that would have watched Stewart live. He will get the numbers in later viewing. 🙂

  4. The vacuum left by Jon’s departure will allow the scum from FOX to suck the life out of this country.
