ABC’s ‘Muppets’ Reboot Accused of Being ‘Perverted’

The ABC revival of “The Muppets,” scheduled to premiere tonight as part of the Alphabet Network’s new fall prime-time lineup, finds itself in the crosshairs of a family values group.

Fortune reports that the conservative group One Million Moms wants ABC to pull the plug on the program, which the group calls “perverted.”

ABC, which has heavily promoted the reboot, has made it clear that the new show is more adult-themed than the kids’ show of the 1970s.

“In the run-up to the show’s premiere, ABC’s promotional campaign has focused on Kermit and Miss Piggy’s alleged breakup and subsequent rebound relationships, the porcine star’s promiscuity, Fozzie Bear’s relationship with a woman, and even included an ad with a Kermit clad in only a scarf that brags, ‘Finally, a network TV show with full frontal nudity,'” Fortune reports.

In a petition launched by One Million Moms, the group warns parents: “1MM (One Million Moms) suspects there are going to be a lot of shocked moms and dads when they discover that the family-friendly Muppets of the 1970s are no more. It appears that no subject is off limits. … The puppet characters loved by kids in the 1970s and 1980s and beyond are now weighing in on abortion and promiscuity.”

The group is encouraging parents to put pressure on ABC to cancel the program.

  1. When the message (programing) is intended for adults Joe Camel and Ronald McDonald had to go. What are we missing here?

  2. No one seems to realize that the Muppet Show of the ’70s was NOT a “kid’s show.” It had plenty of adult jokes and the pilot was called “Sex and Violence.” These imbeciles need to crawl out from under their rocks and pick up a book for once.

  3. “1 Million Crazies” is more like it!

    Bring on The Muppets!!!!

  4. I love groups like 1MM and the PTC. They always launch their efforts decrying TV shows even though the shows have yet to air and they HAVE NOT seen them. I’ve always found that when they say people shouldn’t watch a show, the show is usually worth watching.

  5. I watched “The Muppets” Tuesday night and absolutely loved it. If groups like 1MM and the PTC don’t like it, they shouldn’t watch it or let their kids watch it. My wife and I decide which shows we let our kids watch and we have no problem with networks programming shows with more adult themes. If we let these knee-jerk groups get their way, there will be nothing on except Peppa Pig and Bubble Guppies.
