NBC has cast an actor known for his long run on the network’s drama series “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” to play the Wizard of Oz on the upcoming series “Emerald City.” The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that the part goes to Vincent D’Onofrio, who played Det. Robert “Bobby” Goren for the first 10 seasons of “L&O: CI.”

D’Onofrio is also known for feature films such as “Full Metal Jacket” and “Men in Black.”

His signing for “Emerald City” follows “a prolonged deal-making process,” THR reports. The project has a 10-episode straight-to-series order from the network.

The drama “centers on 20-year-old Dorothy Gale (‘True Detective’s’ Adria Arjona) and her K9 police dog who are transported to a mystical land of competing kingdoms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy,” THR notes. “The series takes place in the fabled Land of Oz in a way never seen before, where wicked witches don’t stay dead for long and a young girl becomes a headstrong warrior who holds the fate of kingdoms in her hands.”

The Wizard role brings D’Onofrio back to NBC after a stint with Netflix on “Daredevil.”

“The casting also reunites the actor with ‘The Cell’ director Tarsem Singh, who will helm ‘Emerald City,'” THR adds.
