CBS Positioning ‘Late Show’ to Battle a New Rival

Forget about Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel. CBS has a different competitor in mind as it figures out its late-night strategy. Variety reports that the network is positioning “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” to battle the DVR.

CBS Corp. Chief Research Officer David Poltrack talked about the strategy this week at the UBS Global Media Conference in New York. Said Poltrack: “The late-night picture is one where everyone’s No. 1 competitor is the playback of prime-time series. It’s not like back in the 1990s, when Letterman and Leno went head to head.”

Variety notes: “To keep viewers from binge-watching their favorites, CBS wants ‘The Late Show’ to serve as a place where people can get jokes, but also commentary on the most-talked about political, cultural and social topics of the day, said Poltrack.”
