Peter Chernin, chairman and CEO of The Chernin Group and the former president and chief operating officer of News Corp., is said to be interested in acquiring Yahoo!’s search business.

The New York Post quotes a source close to talks saying: “Peter has been having conversations about it.” The report notes that Yahoo!’s board has been deliberating over selling its media and search business.

Verizon and SoftBank have also been mentioned as potential buyers, according to the report, which cites sources saying SoftBank does not appear to be interested.

Analysts have valued Yahoo!’s Web businesses at $3.9 billion.

“Chernin is a Twitter board member and has a joint venture with AT&T to build assets in streaming video,” the Post report notes. “Telecom firm AT&T watched its rival Verizon scoop up Web utility AOL recently.”
