Betsy Beers, an executive producer on the ABC dramas “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How to Get Away With Murder” and a longtime producing partner of Shonda Rhimes, talks about Hollywood ageism, and how it affects women in particular, in a guest column for the 2015 Women in Entertainment issue of The Hollywood Reporter.
Beers says she has changed her attitude since she used to try to hide her age, even as recently as a few years ago. “We’re all afraid of getting old,” she writes. “And for women, it’s especially scary. But in Hollywood, where there are far fewer job opportunities for women and youth is generally valued over experience, it’s especially extra-super scary.”
But Beers adds: “The fact is, I’m proud of the years I spent getting better at my job. My experience makes me an extremely valuable asset.”
