The family of Natalie Cole has released the cause of death for the singer, who died on New Year’s Eve at age 65. Reuters reports that Cole “died of a rare lung disease that was first diagnosed five years ago and led to heart failure, her family said.”

Cole’s family said the Grammy winner was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension in 2009 following a successful kidney transplant.

In a statement issued today, her family said: “She responded well to pulmonary arterial hypertension specific agents over many years, during which she performed many concerts worldwide, but eventually succumbed to intractable right heart failure, an outcome that unfortunately commonly occurs in this progressive disorder.”
