Legal experts are weighing in on the bizarre twists in the saga of Sean Penn and Mexican drug lord “El Chapo,” who is now in custody in Mexico.
Rolling Stone published an article by Penn over the weekend revealing that the two-time Oscar winner made a secret trek into the jungle a few months ago to interview El Chapo — Joaquin Guzman Loera. The meeting, arranged by Mexican telenovela star Kate del Castillo, may have played a role in the capture of El Chapo.
“News reports say that Joaquin Guzman Loera, the Mexican drug lord known as ‘El Chapo’ (Shorty), was captured because he reached out to celebrities and producers as part of an effort to produce a movie about his life,” CNN reports. Commenting on the Rolling Stone piece, the report adds: “While it has generated international attention, this interview raises ethical, legal and moral considerations. Penn and del Castillo put themselves and others at enormous risk in pursuing this exclusive with one of the most dangerous men on earth.”
While Mexican authorities reportedly want to talk with Penn about his visit with El Chapo, USA Today adds: “But legal experts reiterated Monday that the Oscar-winning actor-activist did nothing illegal in his secret interview with JoaquÍn ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán last October, despite the outraged harrumphing from among Penn’s critics in the media.”
