‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Will Claim All-Time U.S. Box Office Crown This Week — Here Are the Eye-Popping Numbers

The seventh installment in the “Star Wars” feature film franchise continues its torrid pace at the box office.

Deadline.com reports that “The Force Awakens” is on pace to bring in more than $200 million in the past week to bring its total domestic gross to date to between $740 million and $743 million.

The gross for the movie’s third weekend was estimated to hit at least $90 million. “Star Wars” was expected to set a record for domestic box office this week by passing “Avatar’s” $760.5 million.

The report notes that “The Force Awakens” is the fastest film ever to reach $700 million, hitting that mark in 16 days. “Avatar,” by comparison, took 72 days to reach the mark.

  1. So tired of this type of story — especially from a publication that should know better. You simply can’t compare grosses with movies released years apart. Check out BoxOffice Mojo’s Inflation-Adjusted chart and you’ll realize while Force Awakens is a huge, huge hit, it still has a long way to go to reach the success of the original “Star Wars” (released when average ticket prices were about $2.25), not to mention the true all-time box-office champ, Gone With the Wind.
