The Path That Led Charlie Sheen to Publicly Admit He Is HIV Positive

“It was a secret that had finally become too burdensome to keep,” The New York Times reports in a new story tracing the events that led up to actor Charlie Sheen’s revelation on NBC’s “Today” show in November that he is HIV-positive.

The report says Sheen had spent about four years trying to keep his status a secret, fielding “shakedown” attempts and dodging a series of close calls with the press and bloggers.

“To track the push and pull between Mr. Sheen and the media over several years — his condition flickering in and out of public view — is to see behind the veil of how celebrity secrets are kept hidden, and how they are ultimately disclosed,” the story reports.
