Back to Comedy for Katey Sagal

After a strong dramatic turn on “Sons of Anarchy,” Katey Sagal is headed back to her comedy roots. Deadline.com reports that the actress will play a lead role opposite John Carroll Lynch in a new CBS single-camera comedy pilot.

Prior to her Golden Globe-winning run as the biker matriarch on FX’s “Sons,” the actress was best known as Peggy Bundy, the mother figure for another dysfunctional family, on the long-running Fox sitcom “Married… with Children.” Sagal, the wife of “Sons” creator Kurt Sutter, has also kept plenty of other irons in the fire, including providing the voice of Leela on “Futurama” and pursuing a music career.

Sagal also was a mainstay of Sutter’s drama “The Bastard Executioner,” which wrapped a one-season run on FX last year.

The new CBS project is based on an Australian format, “Upper Middle Brogan.”

“Written by Dan O’Shannon, Robyn Butler and Dan Hope, the extended family show is about a wife and mother who learns she was adopted and that her birth parents are a flamboyant but loving family of drag-racers,” Deadline reports. “Sagal will play Julie, the wife of Wayne (Lynch) and the matriarch of the family. After Wayne lost an eye, Julie stepped in as the lead driver of Team Wheeler.”
