Why Taylor Swift Just Gave Kesha $250,000

Taylor Swift just gave singer, songwriter and rapper Kesha, known for a string of hits including “TiK ToK” and “We R Who We R” and for her performance on Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” a gift of $250,000. USA Today reports that the gift is a show of support for Kesha during a nasty legal fight with producer Dr. Luke.

“On Friday, a New York judge ruled against releasing Kesha Rose Sebert from her record contract with Dr. Luke (real name: Lukasz Gottwald), after she sued him in 2014 for ongoing abuse, including drugging and raping her a decade ago,” USA Today reports. “While other stars like Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande have spoken out in support of Kesha, Swift is the first of Kesha’s high-profile peers to announce a monetary donation.”

Kesha is prevented from recording outside her contract with Dr. Luke following the ruling by New York Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich, who told Kesha’s attorney: “You’re asking the court to decimate a contract that was heavily negotiated and typical for the industry.”
