The season 12 finale of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” (SPOILER ALERT), which aired Thursday night, included a shocker as one of the show’s longest-running characters bowed out.

The Shonda Rhimes series has already received the go-ahead for a 13th season, but actress Sara Ramirez, who has played Dr. Callie Torres since the show’s second season, won’t be back.

In a statement, Ramirez said: “I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ABC but for now I’m taking some welcome time off. Shonda’s been so incredible to work for and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my love to Ellen [Pompeo], the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!”

Rhimes also commented on the news of Ramirez’s exit, saying in a statement: “Dr. Callie Torres came into our lives dancing it out in her underwear almost a decade ago and I could not be happier or more proud of her journey. Sara Ramirez’s performance inspired me as well as millions of fans each week. We wish her the best on her well-deserved time off. I will miss Callie tremendously, but am excited for what the future holds for Sara. She will always have a home at Shondaland.”

Pompeo was among those paying tribute to Ramirez, sending out a tweet saying: “@SaraRamirez portrayal of Callie Torres brought much comfort and understanding to people who needed it her contribution was immeasurable.”

Ramirez began playing Torres in a recurring role in season two before becoming a full-time cast member for the next 10 seasons.

Below is a clip from the season finale posted by ABC, which includes Callie’s last scene on the show …
