Startup Scrambling to Be ‘the Amazon’ for Beer and Alcohol Products

May 6, 2016  •  Post A Comment

A startup racing to be “the Amazon” of the online beer and alcohol market before Amazon itself can take over the marketplace has scored a coup by adding next-day scheduled delivery as an option.

The company, Drizly, has been letting customers order beer, wine and other alcohol products via its mobile app since 2012, with local liquor stores delivering the purchases in under an hour, re/code reports. With the new next-day option, the company will be able to dramatically increase the number of brands it can offer.

“The goal is to build the biggest online catalog of booze available for delivery in the country, so that someday it becomes the de facto e-commerce shop for online alcohol sales,” re/code reports. “Eventually, Drizly plans to add price-comparison tools, too — not a novel concept in many e-commerce categories, but something that is not yet common in the alcohol industry.”
