Why Nerds Are Angry With ‘Jeopardy!’ Host Alex Trebek

Alex Trebek committed what some viewers see as a faux pas this week on “Jeopardy!” when he blurted out that people who are into nerdcore hip-hop are “losers.”

The incident took place during the show’s contestant interview segment, when Susan Cole talked about her appreciation for the musical genre, which she said features “people who identify as nerdy, rapping about the things they love — video games, science fiction, having a hard time meeting romantic partners …”

Trebek fired back with an uncharacteristic diss: “Losers, in other words.”

Cole took the insult well, and even went on to win the game. But Billboard reports that some of the artists involved in the relatively little-known genre felt a need to respond.

MC Chris provided a statement to to the publication saying: “Nerdcore is a genre that has been around for at least 15 years. I’m in my tenth year of touring, and my latest album ‘MC Chris Is Dreaming’ peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard comedy charts this week. It’s a small corner of the hip-hop world but it’s a real and true respite to hundreds of thousands of people that are tired of being called losers, and would rather celebrate their nerdiness instead of trying to conform to society’s mandates.”

Mega Run, who is touring with MC Chris, got a little more personal with his response, posting a video to social media in which he rapped, in part: “Alex Trebek, you lost a lot of respect / I gotta check you off the rip for comin’ out of your neck.” He added: “In case you haven’t heard, nerds make up half of your viewership.”
