Surprise Choice for Dr. Smith in ‘Lost in Space’ Reboot

Many readers will remember the original “Lost in Space” TV series, in which Dr. Smith was played with panache by Jonathan Harris. The same readers may be surprised to hear that the casting for the upcoming Netflix reboot is going an entirely different direction, with the meddlesome stowaway and would-be saboteur Dr. Smith to be played by Parker Posey.

Deadline.com reports that Posey, a Golden Globe nominee best known for her work in the cult hit “Dazed and Confused” and in indie films such as “Party Girl” and “The House of Yes,” has joined the cast of the Netflix project, due to premiere in 2018.

The original series, from sci-fi master Irwin Allen, debuted on CBS in 1965 and made a lasting impression with its three-season run — including giving the world the catchphrase “Danger Will Robinson!”

“The new ‘Lost in Space’ takes its cues from the original CBS series, revolving around the Robinson family, which is forced to come together in a time of crisis,” Deadline notes. “Stranded light years from their intended destination, the Robinsons find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and their own personal demons.”
