Top Broadcast TV Executive Says Commercials Are Hurting Traditional TV

A top broadcast executive says linear television is at a disadvantage in the current media environment because of its dependence on traditional commercial breaks. Variety reports that Fox Networks Group President and COO Randy Freer spoke out on the subject Thursday during a Q&A at the publication’s Big Data Summit.

In his keynote address at the Beverly Hills event, Freer said: “We spend billions of dollars as [an] industry to create great content … and then we interrupt them 16 times with two minutes of ads. But if you wait a half-hour you get a much better experience.”

Freer added: “We as an industry must think about the consumer experience. We have to make it better if we want brands and people to connect and large audiences to accumulate.”

Variety notes: “Freer surprised many in the audience with his candid assessment that the heavy ad loads and frequent commercial breaks in linear TV [are] driving consumers to alternate platforms where the viewing experience is much better.”
