A series that has become one of the staples of the Showtime lineup has picked up a season renewal from the pay-cable net. “Shameless” will be back for an eighth season, the network announced today.

The series aired its seventh season finale last night. Production will begin next year on 12 new episodes.

The announcement was made by David Nevins, President and CEO, Showtime Networks Inc.

Season seven was the show’s highest-rated to date, Showtime noted. The series stars Oscar nominee and Emmy winner William H. Macy and Golden Globe nominee Emmy Rossum.

Created by Paul Abbott and developed for U.S. television by John Wells, “Shameless” is produced by Bonanza Productions in association with John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Season seven was executive produced by John Wells, Nancy M. Pimental, Christopher Chulack, Krista Vernoff, Etan Frankel and Sheila Callaghan.
